Cemetery View - Christmas 2009

Submitted by Ghostly Gadgie on Wednesday, 20 January 2010

[The Ghostly Gadgie has been very late in filing his Christmas View. It’s been very cold so things got more than a bit frozen up in his parts. Still, better late than never. – Editor]

Cold, very cold in here! Nice drop of something would go down well to warm the lads up, I could always win a prize in the bottle draw…

Will it ever take place? Colder than the proverbial witches round here, and nobody wanted to play on Boxing Day anyway, so the betting is strong that will be off, and if there is no match how can there be a prize draw? Might have to be done behind closed doors this year, which would be bad news for Fergy’s chances of winning a couple of nice ones again…

No, just a few injuries coming together, the kind of blip all good clubs have, nothing to worry about, soon get back on track, just got to stay focused, take one game at a time, let everybody else worry about us; the full list from the book of football cliches, oh yes, oh, oh yes. If you get up here on a training night, you can hear them all at it, as the old heads get together and plot and plan for eventual victory; it's like Adolf in his bunker.

Let's turn our attention to the Sunday boys for a change. Sunday morning football eh? Brings it all back, and also back up more than a few times as I recall. But this weekend will be different, the FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup no less, a chance to get on the back pages, Anfield in the distance, games against teams from across the country, and, more important than all of that, an afternoon 2.00 kick off to accommodate the travel of Lobster, our opponents from the fair city of Liverpool, which means there is at least half a chance that most of the team will be sober for once.

Seven not out and sitting on top of the heap, are we the Snow White of the Northern League? I go back a long way and I can't remember a start like this, but is it wise I ask, is it wise? Will the lads get a nose bleed being on top of the pile? Can we handle the pressures of success? Will the little Scotsman's voice last the season?

Cemetery View - August 2009

Two home games, two wins and ten goals, have I changed cemeteries over the summer? Glorious sunshine and the ground looks a picture, canny few of the good folk of Ryhope letting their allegiance go and forsaking the colliery to visit us down the bank, happy smiling faces all round. What could possibly go wrong?

Cemetery View - Dig me up, I'm going to Chester!

A cup final again, and only twelve months since we made a right pigs ear of the last one. Now Ernie Armstrong was a canny old boy, a decent if dirty player in his youth,or so I have been told, but just how much remembrance does he want in Ryhope? However, let's not be ungrateful, promotion might not suit the likes of thee and me, and while admittedly it's not Wembley like what Whitley Bay are looking forward to, it is a night out and a chance to bring fame if not fortune to the village of dreaming spires; or was that burning tyres? I forget....
