Northern League 1

Colin Larkin on the attack during the second half of the match.

Today we take on Guisborough Town at the Sunderland LGV Park for this crucial EBAC Northern League Division 1 fixture.

A must win game for RCA to avoid relegation while the “Priorymen” who hadn’t won any of their last six matches would be looking to do the double over us having won 2-1 earlier in the season.

A two week break since their draw with Pickering Town was not ideal preparation for this match, but Martin has been able to put together a very strong looking squad.

Prior to the match an award was made to Craig Hodgson who has played 150 games for the club and who was called out of retirement along with a number of other players to help the cause.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Davis, Goundry, Hodgson, Swansbury, Trewick, Leonard, Larkin, Callen, Bruton, Turns: Subs: Pinder, Herdman, Ene, Younis, Lennox.

Guisborough Town: Cowey, Cann, Miller, Marron, Hood, O’Sullivan, Fielding, Green, McGee, Frazer, Blackford: Subs: Kiernan, Martin, Williams, Bell.

Keigan Turns competes for the ball during the second half of the match.

Today we welcome Pickering Town to Sunderland LGV Park for this crucial EBAC Northern League Division I bottom of the table clash.

Pickering have struggled to find their form this season and are currently rooted at the bottom of the table, while RCA are languishing third off bottom (if you deduct the 3 points allotted by the league for playing an ineligible player).

RCA, after their hard fought win against Thornaby, were without Swansbury (Groin), Trewick and Callen (both working) and also Larkin (Holiday). Back into the team came Davis, Brown and Leonard.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Davis, Turns, Goundry, Hodgson ©, Brown, Leonard, Ene, Fenton, Bruton, Pinder: Subs:  Lennox, Chappell, Bowmaker, Robinson (Foster), Younis.

Pickering Town: Hunt, McGuckin, Ward, Mills, Roddam, Poole, Love, Thornton, Dicicco, Brooksby ©, Grist:  Subs: Gilga, Godden, Dawes, Alngohoro, Etherington.

George Pinder on the attack during the second half of the match.

RCA travelled down the A19 to take on fellow strugglers Thornaby in this crucial bottom of the table clash at Teesdale Park. “The proverbial 6 pointer at stake”.

The unrelenting rain which was forecast materialised mid afternoon and continued up to kick off time.

The RCA management team made several changes to the team so comprehensibly beaten on Saturday at Newton Aycliffe. Returning to the starting line-up were Wilkinson, Goundry, Hodgson, Swansbury, Trewick, Fenton, Callen and Bruton.

Thornaby, for their part, fielded two ex RCA players in Dean and Croft.

The teams lined up as follows:

Thornaby: Dean, Zachariou, Hindson, Petterson, Booth, Proctor, Croft, Webb, Mitchell, Jackson, Clarkson. Subs: Verity, Flounders, Rowe, Boucher, Williams.

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Goundry, Turns, Hodgson, Swansbury ©, Trewick, Ene, Fenton, Callen, Bruton, Pinder. Subs: Bowmaker, Chappell, Younis, Robinson (Foster), Brightwell.

Debutant Josef Herdman saves a second half penalty.

Three difficult away games in a week, against Bishop Auckland, Whitley Bay and today table topping Newton Aycliffe, was always going to be tall order for a depleted Sunderland RCA side missing a raft of experienced players.

Newton Aycliffe have remained undefeated at home this season and were looking to maintain that record and keep their lead at the top of the table.

The early morning drizzle persisted which made the pitch very heavy, especially in the goalmouth areas.

With only a few senior players available Martin Swales, assisted by John Burnicle and Dom Jones selected a largely young inexperienced team and named Ryan Leonard as captain for the first time.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Herdman, Langley, Turns, Lennox, Bowmaker, Younis, Leonard ©, Johnson, Pinder, Hubbard, Ene. Subs:  Fenton, Chappell, Evans, Purvis.

Newton Aycliffe: McHugh, Munro, Myers, Costello, Brown ©, Petitjean, Dawson, Ferguson, Thomas, Jarvie, Smith. Subs: Davis, Greenwood, Adamson, Clarkson, Mallinson.

Alex Langley blocks a first half Whitley Bay shot.

We continue on our travels, this time through the Tyne Tunnel to play Whitley Bay at their Hillheads Park ground, in this EBAC Northern League Division I fixture.

The pre match warm up became problematic for RCA with both Goundry (illness) and Turns (ankle injury) pulling out of the starting eleven to be replaced by Bowmaker and Langley before a ball was kicked.

RCA welcomed back Greg Swansbury who captained the side, with Hassane Younis and Lee Robinson making their club debuts.

Whitley Bay, under the leadership of manager Nick Gray, are pushing for a top 4 place and after a poor 2021-22 season have turned it around and are real contenders for promotion.

The teams lined up as follows:

Whitley Bay: Lister, Lowery, Porritt, Turnbull, Hall ©, Hutchinson, Ward, Neary, Davison, Geliher, Millington. Subs: Gilchrist, Richardson, Eastway, Young.

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Bowmaker, Langley, Lennox, Swansbury, Trewick, Leonard, Younis, Pinder, Bruton, Ene. Subs:  Robinson, Herdman, Johnson, Turns, Goundry.

Matthew Wilkinson competes for the ball with Bishop Auckland goal scorer Louis Johnson.

Bishop Auckland’s AJS Stadium was the venue for RCA’s next Ebac Northern League Division I fixture. After a poor season by their standards last season, the Two Blues are having a very successful season under the leadership of Chris Hardy and Leon Carling.

A late fitness test declared Turns fit to play but with others missing through work and other commitments it left the manager with only 13 fit players to choose from.

Into the team for his debut came recent signing Alex Bruton, at the other end of the spectrum making his 150th appearance for the club was Craig Hodgson.

The Bishop squad included no less than six ex RCA players.

The teams lined up as follows:

Bishop Auckland: Catterick, Burlace, Risborough, Lay, McGoldrick, Hopson, Whitfield, Gott ©, Giles, Johnson, Patton. Subs: Thexton, Banks, Fairley, Weirs, Elcoate.

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Davis, Turns, Lennox, Trewick, Hodgson ©, Ene, Goundry, Fenton, Bruton, Pinder. Subs: Bowmaker, Herdman, Callen, Larkin, Swansbury.

Thomas Goundry clears the ball during the first half of the match.

RCA welcomed Crook Town to Sunderland LGV Park for this afternoon’s EBAC Northern League Division I fixture.  After an early morning pitch inspection the pitch was deemed playable.

The management team were forced to make three changes to the starting 11 with Callen (previous engagement), and both Trewick and Brown (work commitments) unavailable for selection. Into the team came Goundry, Fenton and Hodgson.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Davis, Turns, Lennox, Goundry, Hodgson ©, Leonard, Larkin, Pinder, Fenton, Ene. Subs: Bowmaker, Herdman, Robinson (Foster), Yusef.

Crook Town: Makepeace, Garritty, Pascoe, Mitton ©, Lazenby, Gardiner, Moody, Havelock-Brown, Hewitson, Brown, Bewley. Subs: Walker, Boughey, Armstrong, Pilling, Lee.

Double goal scorer Colin Larkin on the attack during the second half of the match.

RCA made the long journey to Tow Law Town’s Ironworks Road ground to play this EBAC Northern League Division I fixture.

Before the start of this match both teams had the same number of points, with Tow Law above RCA on goal difference.

Under the leadership of Martin Swales and Gary Errington the rebuilding continues at RCA and our loyal supporters will recognise quite a few “Old Boys” as we roll back the years, the starting lineup including some familiar names of years gone by; Larkin, Callen and Brown joining Davis, Leonard and Pinder for a bit of a reunion. (Watch this space for further signings).

An injury to Orton, the Tow Law Town goalkeeper, meant that Barron was called upon as a last minute replacement.

The teams lined up as follows:

Tow Law Town: Barron, Goldsborough, Joynes, Field, Renshaw, Seymour, Craggs, Page ©, Ardelean, Hurworth, White. Subs: Mallaburn, Marriott, Marley, Hizzett, Gibbons.

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Davis ©, Turns, Lennox, Trewick, Brown, Leonard, Ene, Pinder, Larkin, Callen. Subs: Fenton, Herdman, Bowmaker.

George Pinder competes for the ball during the first half of the match.

The appointment of Martin Swales and Gee Errington till the end of the season in conjunction with a massive media presence in the last seven days saw an excellent turn out at Sunderland LGV Park for today’s Ebac Northern League fixture against the Steelmen of Redcar Athletic.

The third time this season that we have had to re-organise an almost full team, although this was inevitable with the introduction of a new management team

Into the team came Trewick, Davis, Leonard, Mouat, Fenton and Bell.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Davis, Turns, Bowmaker, Trewick, Hodgson ©, Leonard, Mouat, Fenton, T Bell, Pinder. Subs: Lennox, Demirel, Hubbard.

Redcar Athletic: Norton, McNeill, Thompson, Guru, Miller, Holdsworth, Boyle, Hutchinson, Coleman, A Bell ©. Subs: Marshall, Sayer, Fletcher, Milburn, Bean.

On a very cold day the teams were accompanied onto the pitch by Sunderland RCA YFC under 8’s whites with the help of the under 11’s Gold’s. “Well done Lads”

Prior to kick-off there was an impeccably observed minute's silence to remember Tim Robinson, a long time Supporter, Photographer and Website Manager of Sunderland RCA. Tim was a quiet, humble man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Joe Lennox fends off a first half Northallerton attack.

'A Life of Pie', the Northern League blog is here.

This was a fourth consecutive away tie for the RCA youngsters and a long trip to Northallerton Town to face another club who are struggling at the wrong end of the table. After the heavy defeat at Heaton Stannington at the week end, RCA took up the offer of ex Manager Martin Swales to come back as manager to the end of the season.

Martin brought with him Gee Errington, and recruited Craig Hodgson, Matty Wilkinson and George Pinder to help out.

Disaster struck for RCA during the warm up with Goundry pulling up and being replaced by Richardson with Henderson called upon to go on the bench.

The teams lined up as follows:

Northallerton Town: Taylor, Ryder, Hope, Cocks, Burn, Graham ©, Stapley, Parker, Waters, E Henderson, Roberts. Subs: Chidanyika, Jones, Snook, Jackson.

Sunderland RCA: Wilkinson, Lennox, Richardson, Paul, Bowmaker, Hodgson ©, Langley, Hubbard, Pinder, Robinson, Turns. Subs; Johnson, Chappell, Henderson, Tait, Grainger.
